Darby And The Dead 2022
Lonely Girl Dies for Minutes and Gains Ghost Powers
A lonely girl nearly dies and wakes up with a strange gift. Now she can see ghosts everywhere, and her quiet life turns into a secret mission to help spirits no one else can hear.
That's me, Darby Harper. Window. The truth gets people to bug off every time. All right, let's get started. While on vacation at the beach, a girl named Darby and her mom get hit by a strong wave that causes them to drown. Darby immediately gets rescued and brought back to life, but her mom doesn't survive.
On the day of her mom's funeral, Darby suddenly sees a strange woman. And as another man appears in front of her, she realizes that she can now see ghosts who she calls Dedos. After getting to know them, Darby figures out that the Dedos actually need her help to move on to the afterlife. There's no pay, but she then became antisocial and started a side hustle to counsel ghosts and help them do certain things that would help them move on to the afterlife.
During this time, Darby learned that the Dedos are simply dead people who couldn't move on because they had some unfinished business in the real world. Much later, after the summer holiday, Darby complains to her dad, Ben, about going to high school. She says she would prefer being homeschooled, but Ben mentions that going to school is the only way he can get her to socialize. Try to have a good day.
Darby doesn't really seem interested in making new friends, but just as her dad drops her off, he sees a girl named Capri walking into the premises. Ben recognizes Capri as Darby's old friend, and he tells his daughter to consider being friends with her again. Darby doesn't respond to this, and she just heads straight into the building. Interestingly, Darby believes most of her peers in high school are wasting their time doing unimportant things.
A stair. A stair is a dead me. Instead of using this phase for self-discovery, after she enters the biology lab, she looks out the window and sees a man named Gary, who is her friend. Gary happens to be the school's old janitor who died a while ago. And he's also a kind of dedo called a stayer.
In Gary's case, he's only staying in the real world because he's waiting for his wife to die so they can move on to the afterlife together. Almost immediately, Capri and her friends Bri, Taylor, and Piper. Ever heard of someone described as having solid character? Enter the lab and start talking about the promo video for Capri's upcoming birthday party.
Shortly after, Capri's boyfriend, James, comes in, and she looks happy to see him. Just as the students take their seats, the teacher says she has paired them up with a lab partner. Interestingly, James ends up being Darby's partner, and she doesn't seem to have a problem with this because he's a good guy. Meanwhile, Capri tries to get the teacher to make James her partner, but her request gets denied.
I paired you up with your lab partner alphabetically by last. Capri then goes to tell Darby to move over to another seat, but she refuses to do this. Capri seems pissed by this, and she just sits on the table in front of Darby. James says it's not really a big deal that they're sitting separately, but Capri tells him not to say that.
She also refuses to leave the table and Darby just reports her to the teacher. Capri doesn't look happy about this and she calls Darby a freak show before heading to her seat. James then apologizes to Darby even though he didn't make it past the blend audition round and says that Capri can be a little extra sometimes. Later that day, Darby heads out to play a game of chess with Gary.
After a while, Darby wraps up the game and heads to the cafeteria for lunch. there. A boy named Alex shows up in front of her and says that he saw her at the bleachers not long ago. Darby assumes that he's a ghost and she tells him that she doesn't talk to her clients at school. You look like you just seen a ghost as she also says he can come to her office on Friday night because that's when she works.
She tries to walk through him but realizes that he's real. Darby looks shocked by this and Alex asks if she's okay as he jokes that she looks like she has seen a ghost. Darby says she only thought he was someone else. Before she walks away, the principal shows up and says it's good to see that Darby and Alex have already met student and you both seem like such.
Darby looks confused by this, but the principal explains that Alex is a new student who needs a study buddy to show him around. Darby says she doesn't think she's the right person for this, but the principal still tells her to do it. After he leaves, Darby takes Alex to the hall for the extracurricular meet and greet. She then asks why Alex left his old school, and he says he had some issues last year.
He also asks about the work she talked about earlier, and Darby decides to tell him the truth. Having to raise your hand to get permission to take a leak so that he'd find her weird and leave her alone. However, after she tells him that she helps dead people pass on to the next realm, Alex looks impressed and says that he's also into psychic mediums. Darby looks disappointed by this and Alex mentions that he would love to talk to her about paranormal things.
Darby then tells him that she's a lone wolf and Alex says he understands. Following this, Darby heads to her gym class. Oh, pro. I've seen that in the movies. where the cheerleading team led by Capri performs a skit to inform the students about the cheer tryyouts happening next week.
Shortly after, while Capri is using a hair straightener in the locker room, Darby walks in and notices that her clothes are missing. Darby accuses Capri of taking them, but she denies this. As Darby then threatens to report to the principal, Capri decides to return the clothes. Almost immediately, Capri trips over herself and falls into a small pool of water on the floor.
Her friends quickly ask if she's fine. The electric company or something. And as she says she is, she accidentally dips the hair straightener into the water. Unfortunately, Capri gets electrocuted in the process and some cops arrive at the school to investigate her death. When Darby gets home, she sits on the roof and Ben [snorts] sees her there.
He then says that even though Darby never likes talking about her mom, he's bothered that Capri's death might be a trigger that makes her remember what happened at the beach. Thank you so much for giving us your statement. Darby says she's fine, but that she's just tired. Later that night, while Darby is sleeping, Capri's ghost suddenly wakes her up.
Darby looks shocked by this, but Capri mentions that Gary told her about Darby's abilities. She adds that she wants Darby to bring her back to life. Darby then says she can only help Capri move on to the afterlife. Capri doesn't like this and she says she can't miss the tryyouts or her birthday which is coming up in a month.
Wake up, [ __ ] Darby says that Capri is dead and nothing can bring her back. Capri looks pissed by this and as she screams she breaks a glass on Darby's table. Capri looks shocked by this but Darby explains that she's now a form of energy. She adds that with intense focus and practice, dedos can manipulate things in the real world.
Capri asks what she means by diados and Darby says they're ghosts who are waiting to move on. Capri looks confused and asks about Gary and Darby says he's a stayer who has chosen to remain in the real world. No. No. Capri, this is not where you're meant to be. Capri says she also wants to be a stayer, but Darby mentions that she's not supposed to be in the real world.
She adds that it will be very difficult for Capri to be at peace because she'll feel invisible and ignored. Capri refuses to believe this, but she suddenly sees that she no longer has a reflection in the mirror. Darby then says she can deliver Capri's message to anyone, but that once she makes the decision to move on, she'll leave the real world. She also offers to let Capri stay at her house for the night if she's still freaked out by the thought of dying.
She was actually a Scorpio. The next day, Capri goes to meet her friends while they're being interviewed, but she realizes that she's now invisible and people can walk through her. Shortly after, Darby arrives at school and meets up with Gary, who introduces her to a man named Mel, who has just died and is ready to move on. Darby says she'll help him, but that he has to come to her office on Friday night.
After she heads into the school building, she sees Capri walking around, and she quickly hides near her locker. Suddenly, Alex shows up and startles her, but she looks relieved that it's just him. Frustrating thing is is I don't think anyone would understand. As they start talking, Capri shows up in front of Darby.
This gets her startled, but she tries to act normal before telling Alex that she has to go. After this, she goes to the restroom and tells Capri to come and see her on Friday night if she needs anything. Capri doesn't seem interested in waiting till then, and she tells Darby that she's ready to move on after her birthday. She adds that she wants Darby to ensure that the party goes on as planned.
Darby cannot believe that Capri really wants to throw a birthday party after her death, and she just walks away and heads to the biology lab. That's true. I mean, they're no good to me crying in private. Capri then follows her and threatens to frustrate Darby with her abilities. When Darby gets to the class, the teacher announces that James won't be at school for a while because of what happened.
She also asks if Darby wouldn't mind dropping off James' lab homework for him until he's back. Just as Darby is about to say that it would be inappropriate, Capri tells her to say yes, and she does just this. Shortly after, Capri sees her friends watching her birthday promo video if you uncover the tray in front of you. And she tells Darby to try to get their attention.
Darby refuses to do this, and Capri throws Darby's frog specimen across the room. Everyone looks shocked by this, but Darby says that her hand just slipped. She then leaves the lab and heads to the restroom, but Capri follows her as Darby still refuses to do what Capri wants. She uses her new abilities to put Darby's head into the toilet.
Darby looks disgusted by this and when she gets home, she sounds pissed at Capri. Capri then tells Darby that she only wants the party to go on so she can see her friends have fun and dance with James one last time. Darby says she can't possibly get the party back on track, but Capri mentions that she can make Darby popular. Shortly after, Capri sees an old photo of herself and Darby wearing cheerleading outfits.
She then talks about how they used to be friends until Darby suddenly became weird after one summer. Darby says her mom died. You're really blowing your pitch, Capri. And Capri feels sorry for her. She adds that Darby's mom was really cool because she was a very good cheerleader as she asks if Darby's mom ever came to her after she died.
Darby looks offended. Capri then asks if Darby doesn't think her mom would also want her to be a great cheerleader. Darby doesn't seem to care about this, and Capri wonders why she doesn't want to be normal. After a while, Capri convinces Darby to do a makeover and set up a social media account so she can post some new pictures.
The next day, Darby heads to James' house to drop off his homework. Hi, James. I mean, James. When James sees her, he admires her new look, but she jokes that it's only an experiment. James then talks about how much he misses Capri, and Darby says she understands because she lost her mom as a child.
She also explains what it felt like, and James says he can relate to that. After this, he thanks her for coming over because it was nice to talk to someone. The next day, Capri picks out a dress for Darby. And as Ben sees her, he looks amazed. However, Darby tells him not to get used to it because it's only an experiment.
Ben says he doesn't mind and that Darby looks just like her mom. Shortly after, she arrives at school and everyone starts looking at her differently. During lunch, Darby tries to sit with Alex, but Capri tells her to join Bri, Piper, and Taylor at their table. As a boy on the football team, Todd also invites Darby to sit at his table.
Capri tells her to do it, but she refuses. She also ignores Alex and walks away. Later that day, at the bleachers, Capri complains about how Darby isn't putting much effort into helping her get what she wants. Darby doesn't seem interested in helping Capri. And if you follow my plan, then you'll earn their respect organically.
But Gary tries to convince her to change her mind as Capri also threatens to continue frustrating Darby. She agrees to try out for the cheerleading team. Following this, Capri spends the next few days training Darby for the tryyouts. One day, while they're at the beach, Darby suddenly gets a flashback of the drowning accident, and this makes her sad.
Capri eventually asks what's wrong, and Darby says she doesn't like the beach. Capri then praises her for doing well so far, and she also asks why Darby quit the cheerleading team, even though she had the potential to be as good as her mom. Darby says she doesn't want to talk about her mom, but Capri looks confused. She then says that when they were younger, she used to wish Darby's mom was hers.
As Capri also complains about her own mom, Darby says she often wonders if her mom stayed back after she died. Fooling all the dormies is actually kind of satisfying. Capri asks what she means, but Darby says she doesn't want to talk about it. The next day, Darby performs extremely well at the cheerleading tryyouts, and everyone looks impressed.
Interestingly, Alex happens to be the one wearing the doughut mascot costume, and Darby finds this funny. As she talks to him, Capri calls him a donut and says that talking to him is bad for Darby's social status. Even though Darby enjoys talking to Alex, she eventually walks away. And after a while, it is announced that she has made the team.
Capri looks happy about this and Darby also starts feeling great about being popular. After this, Capri encourages Darby to start sitting with Todd and her friends. She also gets Darby to be nice to her friends, and this gets her invited to a private cheerleading practice session. Darby then attends the practice session and eventually follows the girls home. there.
Capri tells Darby to talk about her birthday party. So, I guess we have to practice the stunt. Darby then brings it up during a conversation. And even though Capri's friends initially think it's a bad idea, she eventually gets them on board by telling them that it could be an opportunity for them to become real influencers for accidental electrocution awareness.
Later that night, Darby returns home and Capri looks happy that the party is back on track. Darby then suggests doing something at midnight to symbolize Capri's passing. Capri says releasing a dove is nice and Darby says it's a great idea. Over the next few days, Darby becomes increasingly popular and she also performs well along with the cheerleading squad during a football match.
After a while, the crowd cheers for Darby to dance with the mascot, and she does just this. Darby and Alex enjoy dancing together, and even though they eventually fall, they just joke about it. After the game, Alex asks if she would like to have coffee with him next week, and she agrees. She then heads over to meet Todd and Capri's friends.
Taylor says that Darby doesn't have to talk to the donut after the game, but she mentions that he only wanted to ask if she would like to grab a coffee with him. Don't you have work tonight? Taylor finds this funny and jokes that Alex is probably taking her to Starbucks. Darby doesn't respond to this, but Taylor suddenly mentions that her uncle has agreed to let them use his mansion for Capri's party.
Darby and the others look happy about this, and Todd suggests going to the lake to celebrate. As Darby thinks about following them, Capri reminds her that she has to meet with the Dedos because it's Friday night. Darby then tells Capri to help her inform the Dedos that she won't be around. Capri looks shocked, but Darby says she doesn't want to hang out with dead people tonight.
Capri doesn't look happy about this, and she heads home feeling sad and lonely. The following week, Darby becomes even more popular, and Capri seems jealous. While Darby and Capri's friends are talking about the upcoming party, Taylor sees a post showing that Darby is one of the nominees for homecoming queen. Bri then says that Darby will win because she's about to throw a great party.
Capri looks pissed that they're now calling it Darby's party. Uh, ow, be really. And Darby quickly corrects Bri that it's Capri's party. However, Taylor says it's still Darby's party because she planned the whole thing. This gets Capri pissed because it was her idea and Darby corrects Taylor again.
Capri still looks pissed because her friends can't see her, and she angrily uses Darby's book to hit Taylor. This leaves the girls confused, but Darby says it was a mistake. After the girls eventually leave, Capri accuses Darby of trying to hijack the party because the homecoming committee will give her credit for it. Darby says she doesn't care about it, and she tells Capri to stop being jealous.
Capri says she's not jealous, but as she still seems pissed, she says she's going to stay at her dad's place for a while. Shortly after, Darby sees Gary and Mel and goes to sit with them. Gary then complains about how Mel came to her office on Friday, but didn't see her there. He adds that Mel wants to send a message to his kid before he moves on.
Darby feels bad for not being there to help Mel, and she says he can come this week. Thank you, Darby. Thank you, Darby. The next day, Ben notices that his daughter has completely changed, and he asks if she's okay. Darby says she is, and she also wonders why her dad is complaining now that she has a social life.
Ben says he's only checking up on her, and Darby tells him that she's fine. Before she leaves the house, though, she tells Ben that she needs a studio lighting kit for her room because the lights there are too warm and cozy. Shortly after, she heads to James' house to help him study for an upcoming test. As they eventually talk about other things, James complains about how Capri's friends are trying to use Capri's party to increase their popularity.
Darby says it's for a good cause, but James doesn't think so. He also insults them for coming up with the idea, but Darby doesn't respond to this. Interestingly, James now seems attracted to Darby, and he asks if she can come with him to school on his first day back. Darby then agrees to do it because she feels it's nothing serious, just some environmentally conscious car pooling.
The next day though, she realizes how weird it would be to arrive at school with James. Even though she tries to avoid making things weird, everyone looks shocked to see them together. And as James holds Darby's hand, most people assume that they're dating. After school, Capri's friends ask Darby about the rumor, but she denies it.
However, James shows up and asks if Darby wants him to drop her off at home. Darby says she'll walk, but James tells her to come to his house later because he wrote a song for her. Capri's friends look shocked by this, and Darby just walks away. When she gets home, she remembers that she has a coffee date with Alex, and she quickly leaves the house again.
However, it turns out that Alex has already left after waiting for a few minutes. Elsewhere, Gary tells Capri to try to fix things with Darby. He adds that Capri shouldn't be angry about a party being held in a place where she no longer exists. He also advises her to move on to the afterlife because she'll be happy there.
The next day, Darby apologizes to Alex for not showing up early for their date, but he seems annoyed that she couldn't even call to inform him that she wasn't coming. After he walks away, Capri shows up and tells Darby that she didn't enjoy staying at her dad's place. Just I'm exhausted. Yeah.
As they head to the bleachers, Darby says she has to tell Capri something important. However, Capri interrupts her and says that she's really proud of Darby's homecoming nomination. As Darby tries to say something again, Capri gets distracted when she sees James walking toward them. She looks happy about this, but James suddenly lifts Darby and says that he can't stop thinking about the other day at his place.
Capri assumes that Darby is trying to date James, and this gets her pissed. Darby then tries to explain that nothing happened. But as James starts confessing his feelings for her, Capri looks angry. She then attacks Darby a few times. And even though James notices that something is wrong, he just ignores the situation.
Later that night, Darby explains that there's nothing between her and James. But Capri doesn't believe this. She then brags about how she made Darby who she is. She adds that James would have never liked Darby if it weren't for her. Everybody out. All of you. Darby feels offended by this and she sends all the DOS out of her room before insulting Capri.
Capri then threatens to tear down Darby's fame if she attends her party tomorrow night. Darby says she doesn't care and that Capri can't tell her what to do because she's alive. The next day, Gary looks surprised to see Darby at school because it's a Saturday. He also asks about what happened the previous night, but Darby says she needs to stop speaking to Dedo's because she wants to be normal.
Gary asks if she has tried speaking to Capri, but Darby says they're not friends. She adds that Capri is just another loser stayer who can't move on. Gary looks sad when he hears this, and Darby just walks away. Later that night, James visits Darby and asks if she can take a drive with him.
Darby accepts his offer and while they're in the car, James talks about how he has been seeing different things that point to the fact that Capri is still with him. He also tells Darby that they can't be together anymore and she looks relieved. After a while, James drives to the venue of Capri's party and Darby looks shocked because she thought he didn't like the idea. I was thinking something else was happening.
James says he just wants to say goodbye to Capri and that he's not there for her friends. Suddenly, Bri, Taylor, and Piper show up in front of him, and as he insults them for trying to use Capri's death to become popular, they inform him that it was Darby's idea. James looks disappointed by this, and he just walks away. Darby then sees Alex at the party, but he ignores her because he doesn't want to talk to her.
Shortly after, Darby finds James sitting in front of an Ouija board. He then tells Darby that he thinks Capri is at the party and she's trying to tell him something. As Darby sees Capri, she closes the board and tries to keep it away from James. However, Capri just carries it around.
And as everyone sees the Ouija board flying across the room, they look shocked. Capri eventually scares them by using the board to spell her name and imply that she's at the party. As Darby tells her to stop, James wonders if she can see Capri. I don't think you're going to test too well in the polls after this.
Everyone also looks confused. And as Darby gets frustrated by this, she goes on stage to give a speech about how Capri made her popular. She also talks about how Capri made her feel confident by getting her to come out of her shell. She adds that Capri is special while she's just a freak show.
As she leaves the stage and heads home, Capri feels sorry for her. The next day, most people make up different stories about what happened, and they don't seem to believe what Darby said. Later that day, when Darby gets home, she looks at the old picture of herself and Capri as she talks about how Capri is her only friend. Capri shows up and jokes that it has to be Gary.
Darby looks surprised to see her, and Capri says she has realized that she shouldn't have forced her friend to throw the party. Darby says it was a stupid party, but that she managed to get a pet dove, which she named after Capri. Capri then says she's now ready to move on. But before she leaves, she brings Darby's mom to the room.
Darby looks shocked by this flying around scaring high schoolers. But her mom says she stayed back because she wanted to make sure her daughter was okay and ready to open her heart to people again. She adds that Darby was her unfinished business and this makes her daughter emotional. Shortly after, Capri gets ready to move on and Darby thanks her for bringing her out of her shell.
Capri also says that Darby is the most special person she has ever met. After this, Capri flies into the sky and moves on to the afterlife. The next day, Darby meets up with Gary, who says he'll soon move on because his wife is about to die. Darby then mentions that she feels bad about not delivering Mel's message.
However, Gary says that the donut took care of it. As Darby looks confused, Alex shows up and reveals that he can also see ghosts. Darby asks why he didn't tell her and Alex says he wanted to do it in a private place and not at school. Well, I'm reopening my business. She then asks what happened to him and he mentions that he was in a bad accident last year.
He adds that when he started seeing ghosts, no one believed him, so he just always acted like he couldn't see them. He says he always thought it was a curse until he helped Mel and realized that it could be a gift. She then asks if he would like to work with her, and he agrees. Later that day, Ben gives Darby the lighting kit she wanted, but she says she doesn't want it anymore.
Ben looks pleased to see that the daughter he knows is back, and he asks if she's going out for dinner with her friends. However, Darby says she would like them to order pizza and share stories. Ben agrees to do this, and as they start watching old videos together, Darby's mom shows up and says goodbye to her. Ben doesn't know that she's there and as she moves on, Darby just leans in to rest on her dad.
