The Karate Kid 2010
Boy Learns Karate and Teaches Bullies a Life Lesson
A young boy moves to a new country and struggles to fit in. After being bullied, he meets a quiet master who teaches him Kung Fu, helping him find strength, confidence, and a way to stand up for himself.
I will teach you real kung fu. After a woman named Sherry gets a job transfer to a car factory in China, she leaves Detroit with her son Dre and heads to the airport. On the plane to China, Sherry tells Dre to learn some basic Mandarin so he can blend in when he gets to their destination. Dre doesn't seem interested in this, but he still tries to learn a few words.
A few hours later, the plane lands in Beijing, and Sherry and Dre are picked up at the airport by a company representative. Shortly after, they arrive at the apartment building where they'll be staying. Sherry looks excited and says she's sure Dre will enjoy being in China, but he still doesn't seem pleased that they had to leave Detroit. After Sherry heads into the building, a boy named Harry sees Dre and immediately tries to make friends with him.
He also offers to help Dre carry one of his bags inside. Dre appreciates this and Harry asks why he moved to China with his mom. Here, let me help you. Thanks, man. Dre says it's for his mom's work and Harry asks if he knows any Chinese. Dre says he doesn't, and Harry encourages him to learn the language.
Just then, Dre sees a nearby park, and Harry says it's where kids in the area hang out. He tells Dre to come if he wants. And as Sherry sees them, she looks happy to see that her son is already making new friends. She introduces herself to Harry, who also says his name. Harry then asks if Dre will come over later, and Dre says he'll think about it.
After Harry leaves, Dre enters the apartment, and the company representative continues giving Sherry some instructions on what to do if she needs help. The representative mentions that most people in the area don't speak English, but that if anything goes wrong, Sherry can reach out to the maintenance man, Mr. Han. The representative soon leaves, and as Dre turns on the TV to watch a cartoon, he realizes that it's in Mandarin, and he just turns it off.
Sherry then sees Dre's jacket on the floor and complains about his habit of never hanging it. Dre, pick up your jacket. Shortly after, Sherry goes to the bathroom to take a shower, but she notices that the hot water is broken. She immediately tells Dre to go out to find Mr. Han, and he asks the apartment building security guard where to go.
The guard doesn't understand English, but as Dre says Mr. Han's name, he tells Dre where to go. Dre initially gets lost and meets some men who don't understand English. They look confused as he tries to talk to them, but as he says Mr. Han's name again, they tell him where to go. Just then, Dre finds Han's shop and tells him that the hot water is broken.
Han just ignores Dre and says nothing, and Dre looks confused. He then walks away and decides to go to the park. When he gets there, he sees a girl named Maying playing a violin and seems attracted to her. Almost immediately, Harry sees Dre and invites him to play basketball. Dre agrees to join Harry's team, but after a bad shot, he says he'll just sub himself out.
Just then, a pingpong ball lands next to him, and he sees some old men standing by a table. He also sees Maying looking at him, and he tries to show off by saying he's really good at pingpong. You want this? The old men agree to let him play. And as he loses the game badly, Maying laughs at him.
Shortly after, Harry sees Dre staring at Maying and he asks if Dre won't talk to her. Dre seems unsure about this, but Harry encourages him to go. Following this, Dre walks up to Maying and assumes that she doesn't speak English as he tries to say one of the words he learned on the plane. Maying laughs and asks what language he's speaking.
Dre realizes that she speaks English and he asks what she's listening to. Maying says it's Boach and Dre mentions that he likes her taste in music. He then plays a song on his phone and Break dances to it. Some of the kids at the park stare at Dre strangely, but Maying seems to like his dance moves.
She then asks if she can touch his hair and Dre says it's fine. Sure. As she touches his hair, a boy named Cheng comes over to scold her for playing around instead of practicing with her instrument. Maying says it's what she has been doing, but Chang just lashes out and throws down her notes.
May Ying stands up to him and Dre picks up her notes. Chang knocks them down again, and Dre wonders what's wrong with him. As he tries to stop Chun from throwing down the notes again, Chung gets pissed and pushes him. Dre immediately stands up to defend himself, and Chun and his friends find this funny.
Chung then approaches Dre and beats him up despite Maying's attempts to stop him. Harry also tries to interfere, but Chun and his friends tell him to stay away from the fight. After Chong kicks and punches Dre a few more times, Maying gets him to stop. She then tries to help Dre, but he tells her to leave him alone.
Maying looks sad and walks away, and Dre cries alone while on the ground. Shortly after, he heads home and sneaks into his room while his mom is asleep. The next morning, Dre puts on some makeup to hide his bruises so his mom won't see them. He also wears a hat. And on the way to school, he tries to convince Sherry not to follow him.
Sherry insists because it's his first day. And when they get to the school, they meet the assistant principal, Mrs. Poe, at the entrance. Dre also sees Cheng and the other boys inside the school premises, and he looks scared. Mrs. Poe then tells Sherry that Dre is supposed to wear his uniform only on uniform day.
She adds that the school doesn't allow students to wear hats. As Sherry takes it off for Dre, she notices that he's wearing makeup. Sherry doesn't understand this, but as she looks closer, she realizes that he used the makeup to hide the bruises on his face. She asks what happened and if he got into a fight, but he says he ran into a hole.
Sherry doesn't believe this, but Dre insists that he's telling the truth. Mom, I ran into a hole. Sherry then tells him to go to class, but that they'll talk about it when he gets home. Later that day, Maying sees Dre in the cafeteria and helps him out when he struggles to use his chopsticks correctly.
Dre looks happy to see her and she says she's sorry about what Cheng did the previous day. Dre asks ifQing is her boyfriend, but she says his family is only close to hers. Dre says he's pretty sure Cheng likes her, but she just laughs this off. She then says she's leaving because she has practice.
As she leaves, Cheng knocks down Dre's food and pretends like he didn't do it intentionally. Dre seems pissed, but Mrs. Poe quickly stops him from attacking Cheng. He then walks out of the cafeteria and says he hates the school. Days later, while Dre is practicing the kung fu moves from a TV show, Han comes over to the house to fix the hot water.
He looks surprised to see what Dre is doing, but he just minds his business. Shortly after, he tells Dre that the hot water is working perfectly, but that they need to flip a switch to use it. He then sees the bruises on Dre's face and asks how he got them. Dre says he ran into a hole, but Han figures out that he's lying.
Interesting pull. Almost immediately, Sherry arrives home and Dre tells Han about the damaged door handle. As Han looks at it, Dre goes back to continue his training. Sherry then sees his jacket on the floor and tells him to pick it up. He initially ignores her, but after she insists, he picks it up.
He then waits for her to leave before throwing the jacket back down with some attitude. Interestingly, Han is watching Dre, and he looks disappointed, but doesn't say anything. The next day, Dre avoids coming in contact with Chung and his friends. He ends up running into the school hall where Maying is playing a violin in front of her teacher, who scolds her for not doing well.
As the man steps out for a while, Dre goes to meet Maying, who looks happy to see him. He then asks what she's practicing for, and she says she has an audition next month for the Beijing Academy of Music. So, are you uh practicing for anything? Almost immediately, the teacher returns to the hall, and Dre quickly heads out.
Unfortunately, he bumps into Cheng and the other bullies who snatch his bag and throw everything inside on the ground. Dre looks sad because he cannot do anything and the boys eventually walk away. The next day, Dre tells his mom to sign a note granting him permission to go to the Forbidden City with his classmates for a school trip. Sherry doesn't hesitate in signing it.
And as they continue walking around the market, Dre suddenly spots a kung fu school called the Fighting Dragon Studio. He runs over there and looks amazed to see all the kids showing their moves. He also sees a private section where the instructor Lee trains some special students and tells them never to have mercy on their opponents. Almost immediately, Dre sees Chung in the class and looks annoyed.
He then tells his mom that they need to leave and she looks surprised. On their way home, she asks what happened at the studio because she thought he was happy to be there. Dre says it's nothing, but Sherry insists that she wants to know what happened. Dre says they moved to China and that he hates it there.
Dre, please let me help you. Sherry looks surprised and just before they reach their apartment building, she stops him and asks why he already hates the country even though they have only been there for a week. Dre says it feels like they've been there for a year and Sherry asks what's wrong. She adds that she can't help him if he won't say what's wrong, but Dre says he doesn't think his mom cares about that.
He also mentions that he wants to go back to Detroit, but Sherry says he needs to accept that China is their new home. As he walks away, Sherry looks sad and follows him. Interestingly, Han is in his shop and he hears everything they talked about. The next day, the students head to the Forbidden City, and Dre hangs out with Maying for a while.
He eventually sees Cheng and the other bullies looking at him, and Maying says she wishes someone would do something about them. Dre says he hopes so, too. me too. And he decides to walk alone because he doesn't want any more trouble. Much later, the students are dropped off back at the school.
And Dre moves sneakily to avoid being seen by Cheng and the others as he heads home. He eventually decides to pour dirty water on them. And as this gets them pissed, they run after him. Dre manages to run very fast, but the boys soon stop him near his apartment building. Chung then beats Dre up badly and one of his friends is forced to tell him to stop.
Chung says Lee told them never to have mercy and he plans to follow that instruction. Before he can attack Dre again, Han shows up out of nowhere and stops him. Han tells the kids to go home, but Chung seems pissed and attacks him. Han refuses to hitQ. And as the other boys also attack him, he defends himself and gets them to hit each other.
After the boys beat each other up, they eventually leave and Han takes Dre away to treat him using an ancient Chinese medicine method called fire cupping. What's up with the light bulbs, Mah? Dre then says he thought Han was just a maintenance man. But Han says Dre only thinks with his eyes and that's why he's easy to fool.
Dre then realizes that he doesn't feel pain anymore and Han tells him about the ancient healing method he used. Dre seems impressed and asks how Han was able to beat the boys without even having to hit them. Han says that when fighting angry blind men, it's just better to stay out of the way. Dre asks where he learned kung fu, and Han says his dad taught him.
Dre asks if he has taught anyone before, but he says he hasn't. Dre asks if he would like to have a student, and Han says it depends. Dre says he wants to be trained so he can beat people up. But Han says kung fu is for knowledge, defense, and creating peace, not war. Dre says it's definitely not what Cheng and the others were taught.
And Han mentions that there's no such thing as bad students, only bad teachers. Best fights are the ones we avoid. Dre says it's not like they can go to Lee's school and talk to him about the way he's teaching kung fu. Han says it's a good idea, but Dre says it's a bad one because he'll likely get beaten up if he goes there.
Dre then asks if Han will go with him, but he says he can't. Dre seems disappointed as he leaves, and Han notices this. He then offers to follow Dre to Lee's school. When they get there, they walk in on a training match between two students. One of them already happens to have knocked down his opponent, but Lee insists on knocking him out completely because he doesn't tolerate having mercy or not inflicting pain on opponents.
Dre sees this and tells Han that they have to leave, but he doesn't do this. When Chung spots them, he tells Lee that Han was the one who beat him and the others. Lee then asks what Han wants, and Han says they want to make peace. Lee says Dre should be able to handle himself, but Hans says it's difficult to do that.
When six of Lee's students try to beat him at once, Lee then tells his students to prepare for a one-on-one match against Dre as Chun steps forward. Han tells Dre that they have to go. Lee doesn't like this and he stops Han, saying they can't just come to his studio to disrespect him and leave. He adds that one of them has to fight before they can leave.
Han then sees a poster of a kung fu tournament and says that Dre will fight Lee's students there. Lee likes this idea and Han tells him to inform his students that they have to leave Dre alone so he can train. Lee immediately does this, but he warns Han that if Dre doesn't show up for the competition, he'll inflict pain on both of them. As they leave the studio, Dre looks scared and laments that Han has set him up to be beaten in public.
Han then says there's nothing to worry about because he'll teach Dre real kung fu. I will teach you real kung fu, not what Lee is teaching his students. This makes Dre happy. And the next day, he heads to Han's house and sees a Volkswagen Sioco in the living room. Dre finds this weird and asks about it, but Han doesn't say anything.
He then tells Dre that his first task is to take off his jacket, hang it, and put it back on. Dre thinks it's pretty easy, but Han makes him do it repeatedly. After training ends for the day, Dre seems annoyed as he arrives home as Sherry asks what he learned today. He says nothing.
However, Sherry notices that he hung his jacket just as he came in, and this leaves her shocked. The next day, Han tells Dre to do what he did yesterday, and Dre just continues taking off and hanging his jacket. He keeps doing this for days and gets frustrated because he thought they'd be doing something else. The next day at school, Maying sees Dre and says she heard about the tournament.
She says she hopes he has a good teacher. He's a maintenance man. And he says he does. She then invites him to the upcoming Chi-Shi Festival and he says he'll be there. Days later, Dre laments that he's tired of just training with his jacket. Han then tells him to start hanging the jacket with some attitude.
Dre thinks Han is probably punishing him for what he did to his mom the other day, and he says he knows he should have done better. Before Han can say anything, Sherry arrives and says she got tickets for them to go to the Chi-Chi Festival. Han says he's not going, but Sherry insists. At the festival, Dre meets with Maying and shows her the gift he made for her.
Maying likes this, and Dre says he'll come to her audition if she comes to his tournament. Maying then promises to be there, and they spend the rest of the festival admiring each other. The next day, Dre meets Han working on the car inside the house. Dre asks what they'll be doing today, and Han says it's the same thing.
After Dre does this for a while, he gets tired and says he's no longer training with Han because they aren't doing anything serious. They can beat me up if they want to. Han then calls Dre back and explains that the movements he has been practicing by taking off the jacket and hanging it are basic moves in kung fu. He also implies that he made Dre master it to develop muscle memory.
As he shows Dre what he's talking about, Dre realizes that he has actually been learning kung fu since his first day. The next day, Han takes Dre on a bus trip and says that they're going to learn about something called chai. He says it's an internal energy that moves inside people and gives them power from within. After a while, they arrive at a Tauist temple where Hans says he learned kung fu.
He then mentions that they're going to walk to the top of the mountain to drink from the dragon well. As they begin their journey to the top, Dre quickly gets tired, but Han says they have to keep going. On the way, Dre sees some kung fu masters showing off different moves. He also sees a lady following the same moves as a cobra.
So, Dre. After a while, they reach the top of the mountain and Han shows Dre the well. He says his dad told him that it contains magical kung fu water. He adds that if Dre drinks the water, nothing can defeat him. Dre immediately drinks from the well because he's exhausted and he asks if Han saw the lady copying the cobra's moves.
Han says the cobra was actually copying the lady and that it requires special focus and years of training. Dre says he wants Han to teach him how to do that so he can control people. However, Han says the only person Dre has to learn to control is himself. Following this, they start doing more intense training and Dre learns very fast.
After a few days, Han finishes fixing his car and he tells Dre to take the day off tomorrow. Dre asks why and Han says too much of something isn't good. He adds that Dre has been training a lot and he needs rest. The next day at school, Dre notices that Maying is worried about something and he asks what's wrong.
Isn't that what you've been practicing for? She says her audition is tomorrow and she's worried that she might not get picked. Dre says he'll be there to support her and that he's sure she'll do well. Maying thanks him for the kind words and says she has to practice. Dre then tells her to take the day off because doing too much of something is bad.
He also suggests spending some time to have fun and she agrees. After a few hours, Maying gets a call from her dad who informs her that her audition is in 2 hours. Dre looks surprised because he thought it was tomorrow, but Maying says her dad is coming to pick her up. Shortly after, her dad arrives and takes her to the school for the audition.
Dre also heads there alone and hopes he'll make it there in time. When he arrives, Maying is almost done with her performance, and he enjoys how well she's playing the violin. After she ends her performance, that was just great. Dre is the only one who claps and her violin teacher just heads out.
As Maying's parents commend her performance, she sees Dre waving at her and she waves back. Just then, her dad tells her something and as she walks up to Dre, she says they cannot be friends anymore because he's a bad influence on her. Dre looks sad as she walks away with her parents and Cheng tells him not to be late for the tournament. Dre then decides to go to Han's place, even though they aren't supposed to train today.
When he gets there, he sees Han smashing the car he just fixed. Dre looks shocked and asks what Han is doing. Han then explains that today is the anniversary of the death of his wife and his son. He says they died in a car crash while he was driving, and every year he punishes himself by fixing the car and destroying it on the anniversary of their death.
As he looks sad and cries, Dre lifts his spirits by showing that he has mastered some of the things Han taught him. Following this, they continue their training, and Dre improves significantly as the tournament day gets closer. I cannot remember what are we arguing about. Interestingly, Maying is still avoiding him at school, and he looks sad.
Days later, Han takes Dre to the venue of the tournament so he can see the trophies in the place where he'll be competing. As Dre admires the hall, Han tells him that whether he wins or loses, it doesn't matter. He adds that Dre just has to fight hard and earn the respect of the boys, so they'll leave him alone. He also gives Dre a special uniform for the competition.
Dre thanks Han for this. And Han says Dre has taught him an important lesson that when life knocks us down, we can choose whether or not to get back up. Dre looks happy and says that Han is the best friend he has ever had. After he hugs Han, he says he needs a favor from him. A while later, Dre heads to Maying's house and reads the apology note Han wrote for him in Mandarin.
May Ying's dad seems impressed and says he'll let his daughter come to the tournament. On the day of the tournament, Dre looks nervous and starts wondering if he'll do well, but Han encourages him. Despite this, Dre struggles in his first match and only wins by a narrow margin. Meanwhile, Ching beats up all his opponents mercilessly on his way to the semifinal.
Dre also grows more confident and takes down all his opponents easily. During Cheng's semi-final match, he stares at Dre while beating his opponent, and Dre looks scared. After Cheng wins and proceeds to the final, Dre goes up next against another kid from the Fighting Dragons, Leang. Before Leang goes up to fight, Lee stops him to give him some tips.
Leang says he's sure he'll beat Dre, but Lee says he wants Dre to be broken. Leang looks bothered about this and during the fight, he reluctantly attacks Dre in the leg with the aim of breaking it. Dre gets badly hurt in the process and Leang gets disqualified. Han quickly goes to help Dre and Sher and Maying also meet them at the clinic.
The doctor says Dre's night is done because he's badly injured and it's better not to continue. Doctor say you did great. Dre looks sad and tells Sherry and Maying to stay outside because he wants to talk to Han. After they leave, he tells Han to use firecping to heal him like he did a while ago.
Hans says there's no need for that because Dre doesn't have to prove anything to anyone. He adds that Dre has done well enough by reaching the final and people already respect him. Dre insists that he wants to continue and he reminds Han that he has the right to choose whether to get back up or not. Han asks why he wants to do that and Dre says he's still scared of being bullied.
He adds that going out to fight is the only way he can overcome his fears. Han then uses fire cupping to heal Dre before the judges can announce Chung as the winner. Han comes over to inform them that Dre is going to continue. Chung and Lee look surprised and everyone applauds Dre as he comes back out.
When the fight begins, Dre strikes Chung down twice to take the lead. Lee then calls Chung over and tells him to break Dre's leg. Chung looks shocked, but Lee tells him to have no mercy. As the fight continues, Chung strikes Dre's injured leg, and Dre falls badly to the ground. Everyone looks worried, but as Dre stands back up, Lee cannot believe it.
Dre then uses the snake stance he saw at the temple, and Lee shouts at Cheng to finish him. Surprisingly, Dre maintains his focus and hits Chung acrobatically on the head to knock him down. Lee cannot believe this, and Han, Sherry, and Maying look happy because Dre has won the tournament. Interestingly, Ching now respects Dre and he presents him with the champions trophy.
Lee seems pissed and as he leaves with his fighters, they suddenly stop to bow to Han, who they now respect as a real kung fu master. Lee seems really annoyed, but the kids no longer care what he thinks. Following this, Han and Dre leave the arena to celebrate their victory. After Dre moves to China with his mom, he gets bullied frequently by a boy named Cheng, who is jealous of Dre's relationship with a girl named Meing.
Dre tries to stand up to Cheng, but this only gets him into more trouble. Luckily, a maintenance man named Han eventually helps Dre and offers to teach him real kung fu. This makes Dre happy and he registers for a kung fu tournament so he'll get the chance to beat Cheng and earn the respect of the other kids at his school. Against all odds, Dre wins the tournament.
